Bottom line: a credit repair company does the same disputes you're legally allowed to do yourself, and charges monthly while it works. DIY costs time and organization. The right software cuts the time down and costs a fraction of a few months of service.
What credit repair companies actually do
Legitimate credit repair companies review your reports, find items to challenge, and send dispute letters to the bureaus and creditors for you. That's the same dispute right the FCRA gives you directly. There's no special channel a company can use that you can't. What you're paying for is the labor and the organization.
What they cost
Monthly fees for credit repair services usually run about $60 to $150 per month, and flat-fee programs are often around $400 (ConsumerAffairs). Because disputes take place in 30-to-45-day rounds, a typical engagement lasts several months.
| Credit repair company | The Deletion Machine (DIY) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | ~$60–$150 every month | $297 one time |
| 6 months | ~$360–$900 | $297 |
| 12 months | ~$720–$1,800 | $297 |
| Access length | As long as you keep paying | 2-year license |
| Who does the work | The company | You, with letters drafted by the software |
| People covered | Usually one person, or a couples plan | You plus two other people |
| Guarantee | Varies | 30-day money-back guarantee |

What the law says credit repair companies can't do
The federal Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) sets ground rules for companies that sell credit repair services. Under it, a credit repair company:
- Can't charge you before the services are fully performed. Up-front fees are illegal.
- Must give you a written contract spelling out the services, total cost, and time frame.
- Must let you cancel within 3 business days of signing, with no charge.
- Must give you a written disclosure of your rights, including that you can dispute errors yourself for free.
- Can't tell you to lie to the bureaus or to create a "new" credit identity.
If a company wants payment before doing anything, or promises to remove accurate negative items, walk away. The FTC's credit repair guidance covers more warning signs.
When a company might make sense
- You have no time or patience for paperwork and would rather pay to hand it off.
- Your file is complicated, with identity theft across many accounts or a mixed file with a relative.
- You want someone to review your reports with you before you decide.
If that's you, BCR Consulting, the company behind this software, has offered done-for-you credit consulting since 2008. See bcrconsulting.us.
When DIY makes more sense
- You have a handful of items, and most people have five or six.
- You're comfortable reviewing, printing, and mailing letters in rounds.
- You want to keep control and not pay month after month.
- You want to help a spouse or family member too. One license covers three people.

People who give up on DIY usually don't quit because the process is hard to understand. They quit because it's tedious: combing three reports, writing a specific letter for each item, and comparing new reports against old ones each round. Software built on the same engine professionals use removes that work. Start with our guide on how to dispute credit report errors.
